The concept of “Missing Artworks” originated from an experimental work I created for the exhibition *AfterImage* in the summer of 2014, during my residency in New York City.
At the time, Cuchifritos Gallery was located inside Essex Street Market, which was scheduled to be relocated. I began making *Missing Artworks* based on my daily observations of the people and environment of the market.
I first made illustrations of people within the market, and then cut the human figures out of the artworks, leaving only the backgrounds and frames. I installed each work near the market stand or location where the original scene had been observed and painted.
I was drawn to this idea of “missing.” By removing the figures, the work extended the process of viewing and introduced a more interactive relationship between the two-dimensional image, the actual space, and the people within it.
Placing local and documentary subjects within framed artworks has also remained an important element in my practice.
